Liquid Mask

i was walking around the water’s edge,
this body with a skeleton;
foreign limbs under a liquid mask.
.
at a first glance, one could be fooled
into thinking these were trees;
the bay bearing branches,
a sign of deep roots and growth.
but as i looked closer,
i realised
distance is deceiving.
.
the closer i found myself
to these limbs, i saw it;
these unnatural frames.
.
there were two bicycles,
wheels sticking up.
and further, a trolley turned
with its feet to the sky.
closer to the waters edge,
i could see a chair,
its leg exposed to the elements.
.
.
.
it grieved me; i was struck how
this is an analogy for our growth
as followers of Christ.
He is the Living Water who fills us,
as we see the fruit of the Spirit rise
to the surface for all to see
and give God glory.
.
but when there is toxicity in the body,
we see brokenness and stagnation.
when Love runs dry,
what can look like fruit may just be
an illusion of life.
.
there might be objects of idolatry
that don’t belong in us.
they may add an element of intrigue,
perhaps even an unconventional beauty.
.
but they were not created for us to harbour.
if we hold them,
they may wound us and others.
but the good news is:
Gods’ grace is like a river of Life,
pouring in and through all that He has made,
as we are made pure in His sight
because the Love of Christ.
.
.
.
i wonder what you are letting into your soul?
are you feeding on Him in your heart with thanksgiving?
are you thirsting for His Word or this world?
are there signs of growth or stagnation in your life?
.
.
.
i pray that the Spirit of the Living God
will continue to be working in our hearts and minds
so that we may bear fruit for His kingdom, His glory,
and that any foreign idols, any objects of worship
or images of this world that do not belong in us,
might be removed in the name of Jesus;
replaced with a pure heart before Him.
.
may the Spirit do His sanctifying work
